Porcelain Veneer Dentistry

Smile Design - Cosmetic Smile Line Repair

Dental veneer laminates have become a favorite restorative product due in part to popular TV shows like Extreme Makeovers and The Swan. Porcelain veneers have been available for perhaps 20 years or more but have achieved increased levels of successful application because of on-going improvements in the fabrication process and especially, bonding compounds and techniques.

Although failures do occur, it is rarely because of product failure. Veneer laminations can fail or go bad for a variety of reasons that consumers should be aware of. Learn more about the causes of veneer failure here.

Feldspathic Porcelain

Amazing cosmetic changes can be made to individual tooth structures that can include sizing (width and height of each tooth), color shading, values of opalescence (colorizing that eliminates the flat white appearance of substandard porcelain) and tooth positioning (overcome minor rotations or crooked teeth).

Premium grade porcelain (feldspathic) enables our patients to virtually design almost any type of smile makeover imagineable. Since veneer products must be implemented with care, Dr. Marinic assures that certain functional characteristics of a smile design are maintained, to prevent failures.

Rule of Golden Proportions: Mathetical Relationships

The Rule of Golden Proportions, popularized by the renowned Las Vegas Institute (LVI), is followed in most multi-veneer makeovers. Dr. Marinic applies the mathematical proportions for creating different flavors of the perfect smile.

Smile line design concepts exist for females, males, young adults and mature adults. These are commonly refered to as the feminine, masculine, youthful or mature smileline. Applied correctly, the Rule of Golden Proportions can create a smile result for some patients that Mother Nature couldn't achieve.

Instant Orthodontics

Improvements in veneer fabrication processes and bonding chemistry eventually enabled skilled dentists to create a variety of orthodontic changes for patients that are not only cosmetic... but with the ability to improve certain bite and occlusion characteristics.

This procedure and treatment choice became especially popular for adults who had certain orthodontic changes in mind, but without the use of traditional metal orthodontic braces. With skillful use of individual tooth preparation techniques and veneers created on a tooth by tooth basis, crooked or rotated teeth could be resurfaced to the extent that tooth structures gain size and the appearance of proper "fit" with existing teeth.

In our office patients with certain types of orthodontic issues can select the use of Instant Orthodontics (using veneer products only) or the use of combined Invisalign Clear Aligners and veneer products for certain, problematic tooth structures.

Diagnostic Waxups - Occlusal Study

Patients receiving treatments that involve multiple veneers participate in the diagnostic and design process of creating the smile they want.

Dr. Marinic provides diagnostic models that enable patients to select the veneer style with the sizing and coloration effects they want. Once the perfect smile has been designed on the model, the patient is fitted with veneer temporaries that are based on the model.

Certain functional aspects of the design process are monitored by Dr. Marinic to assure that occlusal relationships are either maintained or improved, to prevent bonding failure or damage to the laminate product due to unnatural biting forces (important for bruxers).

The patient wears the temporaries for 2 weeks or so, to assure cosmetic and functional characteristics are the best possible. If not, adjustments are made until all technical and asethetic goals are achieved.

The extra steps taken for creating and developing the new smile design is, unfortunately, not provided in many cases .... which typically result in failure. Consumers should insist on Diagnostic Wax Ups if four (4) or more veneers are used in a treatment plan.

If there is any single factor within veneer dentistry that can produce the most amount of heartache for veneer patients, it would be the principles of the diagnostic waxup. Many horror stories of total or multiple veneer failure occured because of inadequate or non-use of articulators, stone models and diagnostic wax ups.

Low Prep Veneer - Non Invasive Bonding

Minimally invasive dentistry is gaining popularity. Veneer dentistry is considered to be less invasive than the procedures typically associated with dental crown treatments.

Low preparation veneer Hybrid veneer products, such as the Vivaneer, now possess characteristics that require literally no tooth preparation or the least amount (minimally invasive) of tooth preparation for assuring a stable bond.

Our patients are offered a wide variety of veneer choices to create the cosmetic and smile makeover result they seek. The ultimate choice of product is usually based on the number of cosmetic qualities wanted by the patient.

Thin shell veneers are ideal for patients who have either compromised dental enamel or sensitive teeth. Dr. Marinic can also provide special veneer products that enable degrees of flourescence and opalescence that mimic a natural tooth.

Another special veneer quality is the ability of the veneer to contract and expand with the natural tooth, which can eliminate the sensitivity issue that some veneer patients complain of when eating or drinking hot and cold foods.

Questions?

Veneer dentistry can pose a variety of potential problems for some patients. Existing tooth structure health, dentin issues and rotated or crooked teeth are examples of the special considerations that should always be evaluated. Persons with a special veneer interest that isn't addressed on this page or our failed veneeers page are invited to contact Dr. Marinic directly with their questions.

Use our convenient on-line Consult Request form or the Ask The Dentist form. Dr. Marinic will respond to you directly with the answers or information you need to make an informed decision.
